Parejillas: How to Identify the Driving Side Without Trusting One Car

Learn to distinguish left- and right-hand traffic through lanes, moving vehicles, signs and junctions, then use that evidence carefully in Parejillas.

Knowing which side of the road traffic uses can separate two otherwise convincing groups in Parejillas. A tropical road might belong to a left-driving or right-driving country, and English text does not settle the question either. The useful clue is not the landscape’s general appearance but the way traffic is organized.

A still image can nevertheless be deceptive. A car may be overtaking, turning or parked against the normal flow. The camera could be on a one-way street, and some scenes contain no traffic at all. Driving side is therefore best treated as a geometric deduction supported by several compatible observations.

Reconstruct the road before reading the traffic

Start by identifying which parts of the road carry each direction. Look for three different features:

  1. The outer edges of the carriageway.
  2. The centre line separating opposing traffic.
  3. Lane lines separating vehicles travelling in the same direction.

The distinction matters because a painted line does not necessarily divide opposing flows. Several dashed lines on a broad avenue may separate lanes moving together. A narrow road may have no centre line, forcing you to estimate its midpoint from its width, bends and vehicle positions.

Trace the markings towards the horizon. Perspective makes them converge, but they can usually reveal the corridor occupied by the camera. A camera path to the left of the true centre favours left-hand traffic; a path to the right favours right-hand traffic.

Do not apply that rule until you have found the real division between directions. Mistaking an ordinary lane line for the centre line reverses the entire deduction.

Treat the camera as another road user

When imagery was captured from a public road, the camera’s position is often the strongest starting clue. Ask which half of the carriageway it appears to occupy.

On a two-way road, a camera travelling to the left of the centre is consistent with left-hand traffic. The corresponding position on the right supports right-hand traffic. Measure that relationship against the road itself, not the centre of the photograph: the lens may be offset, while a bend can make the vehicle’s path look artificially central.

Check the nearest shoulder, the distance to the centre line and the route the vehicle would follow beyond the visible foreground. On a curve, extending the road edges mentally is more dependable than judging the position of a visible bonnet or dashboard.

Camera position becomes weaker evidence in car parks, construction areas, private access roads, unmarked tracks, narrow lanes and one-way streets. Keep both possibilities open in those settings.

Classify vehicles before using their positions

A vehicle helps only if you understand what it is doing. Place each one into a useful category:

  • Traffic moving away: usually shows its rear and shares the camera’s direction.
  • Oncoming traffic: normally shows its front and occupies the opposing flow.
  • Parked vehicles: may face either way and do not establish the legal convention.
  • Vehicles manoeuvring: may be turning, overtaking or temporarily crossing the centre.

Consider a road with a visible centre line. The camera and two cars moving away occupy the left half, while an approaching vehicle occupies the right. All four positions support the same interpretation, creating strong evidence for left-hand traffic.

Now reduce the scene to one van stopped along the left edge. Its location is real, but its meaning is uncertain. It could be parked against the flow, making a delivery or preparing to rejoin traffic.

The practical rule is: prefer several consistent moving vehicles over one conspicuous vehicle.

Read junctions as movement diagrams

Junctions expose trajectories that may remain hidden on a straight road. Inspect turning lanes, islands, arrows, stop lines and the positions from which vehicles enter or leave.

At a side street, determine which half of the main road receiving traffic enters. On a divided highway, establish the direction of each carriageway before interpreting individual lanes. The median normally separates opposing flows, whereas the lanes between one road edge and the median tend to move together.

Roundabouts can also help, but a partial view is easy to reverse mentally. Do not infer the circulation pattern merely from the location of the central island. Look for entry geometry, exit geometry, arrows or moving vehicles that reveal a path around it.

A useful test is to imagine an arrow over every visible moving vehicle. If all the arrows require drivers to keep left, or all require them to keep right, confidence increases. If one arrow conflicts with the rest, check whether you have misread a parked car, a turn lane or a one-way street.

Use signs and roadside equipment as confirmation

Road signs face the people expected to read them. Their visible face or metal back, along with the placement of traffic lights, can therefore confirm traffic direction.

If sign faces repeatedly address vehicles travelling on the left half of the road, they support left-hand traffic. The back of a sign may reveal that its message is intended for vehicles approaching from the opposite direction.

One sign is not always decisive. It may serve a side road, be duplicated across the carriageway or have been turned. Traffic lights can likewise appear before, beyond or on both sides of an intersection depending on local practice.

Use roadside equipment as an independent evidence family rather than a shortcut. A strong conclusion is not “there was a sign on the left.” It is “the camera uses the left, oncoming traffic passes on the right, and the signs face directions consistent with that arrangement.”

Steering-wheel position is secondary evidence

When a vehicle interior is visible, the driver’s position may provide another clue. Many left-driving systems predominantly use right-hand-drive vehicles, while the reverse arrangement is common under right-hand traffic. This places the driver nearer the road’s centre on an ordinary two-way carriageway.

It is not a universal equivalence. Vehicles are imported, buses and specialist vehicles may have unusual layouts, and cars designed for an earlier or foreign system can remain in use. Samoa, for example, legally switched from right-hand to left-hand traffic in September 2009, with transitional rules allowing existing vehicle configurations to continue operating.

A steering wheel should therefore confirm a conclusion already supported by road geometry. It should not outweigh several clear vehicle trajectories.

Turn driving side into a grouping tool

Parejillas does not require you to name every country immediately. Driving side can first be used to test whether a proposed set of images is coherent.

Suppose four scenes share tropical vegetation. Two road layouts demonstrate left-hand traffic, another contains several vehicles clearly using the right, and the fourth has no road. Climate makes the set look attractive, but traffic contradicts it. Do not force the four together simply because they all look tropical.

Use this repeatable process:

  1. Mark every image as left, right or undetermined.
  2. Require two compatible observations before assigning left or right.
  3. Compare those labels with provisional groups based on landscape, architecture or language.
  4. Use a clear contradiction to break a weak group.
  5. Only then apply regional knowledge to suggest a country.

Colonial history or neighbouring countries may create a sensible expectation, but neither replaces direct observation. Traffic systems can change, and historical patterns have exceptions. First establish how vehicles move; then use geography to decide which places remain compatible.

A ten-second inspection routine

Whenever a road appears, follow the same order:

  1. Find the road edges and true centre.
  2. Place the camera’s trajectory.
  3. Separate moving vehicles from parked ones.
  4. Verify where opposing traffic travels.
  5. Confirm with a junction, sign or traffic signal.
  6. If evidence conflicts, leave the image undetermined.

The aim is not to decide faster than the evidence allows. It is to prevent one parked car from turning a weak impression into a false conclusion. In Parejillas, “undetermined” can be more useful than invented certainty: it keeps alternative groups available until another image supplies the missing second clue.
